Grisaille

Grisaille is monochromatic painting, using shades of grey or other neutral tones, to build the illusion of form. The paint, which is made of finely ground glass and metallic oxide pigment is mixed with water, oil or other mediums and fired onto the glass in a kiln. It becomes a permanent part of the glass.  Grisaille paintings survive from the 11th century.
